Friday/Saturday roundup

The Elite league is back in full swing after some brilliant games this Saturday night and Friday. There was also a CHL game for Nottingham Panthers with Lukko Rauma in Finalnd! Braehead met Belfast in a thriller, then Cardiff met Hull in another great encounter between these unpredictable sides. The tightest game of the night though, was between Coventry Blaze and Fife Flyers. All were one goal games on Saturday. The curtain raiser on Friday was slight different though. let's see what happened...

Elite league gets off with a bang, Giants send Stars shooting

The summer wait was over and ice hockey returned with this action packed game between the League/Erhardt and Gardiner conference champions who played like champions. Despite playing well, Belfast did dominate to be fair. Three goals up at one point, and Dundees only damage was a goal in the second period, before Giants sealed it late on. Finals score: Giants 4-1 Stars.

Belfast Giants (Ray Sawada) scored the first goal of the EIHL season. The team that has done this for the past two seasons has gone on to win the league. Some happy Giants fans now I bet. :-)

CHL challenge continues for Panthers, who lose 6-2, but heads held high

Nottingham Panthers continued their CHL trip visiting Finland to take on Lukko Rauma once again. The last time the sides faced, it was Steve Lee 2-4 Lukko, as Steve scored all of Panthers goals. Lukko scored 4 in that game, but scored 4 in the first period last night for 4-0, but improved for the final two periods with 1-1 ties, Evan Mossey and Brandon Benedict, Panthers scorers. The final score was 6-2, but Panthers should be proud for their efforts, as they play Lulea Hockey again tomorrow.

Early overtime goal clinches victory for Devils for a bright start

Cardiff Devils and Hull Stingrays started their league campaigns in great fashion as they both got a point before Jake Morissette won it for the Welsh side 46 seconds into overtime. The teams have totally new rosters, and pre-season wise, Devils were favourites, so no surprise when they got the two points!

The game was action packed from the start with both teams scoring in the 6th minute. 1-1

Joey Martin put Devils up 2-1 in the second before another brilliant period in the third. Stingrays fought back and levelled it up with Cale Tanaka on target. The underdogs had a point and the game went to overtime as both teams continued to fight, but not for long, as Morissette scored again to clinch the two points.

Clan are comeback kings with victory over Giants

They were fresh from victory on Friday, but their next game for the trip in Scotland wasn't easy for the Belfast Giants. A very well played game by both sides proved the best game so far. The defending league, and unbeaten team went 2-0 up before Clan pulled one back starting a run of three unanswered goals for a 3-2 lead. However, Giants roared back into it tying it with an empty net with 1:22 to go. This sent the game into overtime and shootout which looked to be scoreless, but Derek Rhoel netted the final shot to send Glasgow into celebration!

Flyers and Blaze battle it out and Blaze win...Just

A delayed faceoff, but no one will mind, because they got some great entertainment. These teams gave their all in Fife Flyers vs Coventry Blaze. It was played like a playoff final and Blaze were the only team who got through around the halfway mark with Rory Rawlyk on target for 1-0 and the only goal.

There's more tomorrow, previews in the morning! :D
