The big celebration of playoff weekend got underway today with fans from across the nation coming to Nottingham for a great atmosphere. The first two semi finals were Belfast Giants taking on Fife Flyers at 1pm followed by Sheffield Steelers facing off vs Braehead Clan at 5pm. These two matches were tight until the end but there had to be a winner to go to the grand final!
Breathe taking action sees Giants edge Flyers in late winner...
They don't get much better than this! Fife Flyers were the underdogs in the first Playoff weekend game on a Saturday Afternoon against runaway elite league champions Belfast Giants. These two teams gave their all in this one as both goalies were showing they would take no rubbish at all in a scoreless first period.
Flyers came out well in the second, even hitting the bar on one occasion then probably the most shocking miss you will see, with Flyers net-minder Kevin Regan miles out of his goal Giants had a chance to score in an empty net...only for the shot be to be blocked. Still scoreless at the end of the second.
Both teams were on fire, and so were the fans, the place was going mental and for Giants it paid off as Kevin Saurrette zapped a goal which proved to the winner in an amazing game of ice hockey.
And that was only the start...
Twists and turns happen in passionate game seeing steelers join Giants in final...
Sheffield Steelers knew Braehead Clan were going to press really hard in this one which they did. It was a feisty match to start with and both teams, you could tell, wanted this a lot! Clan were first on the board as Neil Trimm edged the puck past Frank Doyle for 1-0 but Steelers were quick to level though as Nate Discasmiro tied it up and by this point, both teams were playing to their strength. A goal was coming and it did, for steelers, Dustin Kohn firing past Doyle for a 2-1 lead after the first period!
Clan pushed hard in the second and Ash Goldie blasted home for 2-2 going into a huge final period with the whole building on the edge of the seats!
The game winner came in the third as Robert Dowd fired high for a final score of 3-2 to steelers.
