Are the Stingrays becoming the new power house of the league?

Sorry I've been quiet of articles lately but here's one for you! I'll try to do as many as I can!

So, here we go! I had to look into Hull Stingrays first as if you cover some facts, they are growing from last years bottom of the league club to this years 'watch out EIHL' team!

The facts...

So far this year some things that are making them look a threat are:
Ben Bowns is making 30 to 40 (even 60) saves a game making him one of the best goalies in the league.
They also broke their shootout jinx winning their first in years!
Carl Lauzon, Guy Doucet and Jereme Tendler are scoring goals daily and can't stop, Doucet especially, he even scored five goals once in a game, against Cardiff Devils.
They beat defending league champions Nottingham panthers too on Saturday which is the ultimate victory.
They were unbeaten in pre-season

So with all the good things, whats the problem, why aren't they top of the league...

PosELITEGPWLOTLSOLPTS
1Belfast251950139
2Braehead241463132
3Dundee241481130
4Sheffield241391128
5Nottingham221371128
6Coventry221182125
7Hull2310101223
8Cardiff239130119
9Fife227121217
10Edinburgh
The current league table shows Hull in 7th, despite being a great team. Why aren't they top if they are so good? Two answers to that. Starting off with the main problem, defense! They play so well when scoring goals, but goalie Ben Bowns is facing 30/40 shots per game because the defense is letting him do all the work and he may be saving most of them, stunning teams across the league, he sometimes has games where he concedes 4 to five goals. This shows that the defense should be ready at all times. Because even the best of goalies can have an off night anytime. If this does happen, the defense has to rescue them. However, if not prepared, the off night goalie concedes goals and you loose.

That doesn't mean though that if your goalie is having a demolition night, you let him do it all. No way. If he plays well, you do too. And with Stingrays good offense already amazing, if the defense improves, it can stop shots pass to the forwards and create more chances. Already, they have good goaltending, and good offense so good defense will make the whole team good filling that gap to make them capable champions.

Shootout curse is no more...

So over the past few seasons, Stingrays worst part of their game was the tie breaking situation, the best of three penalty shootout. Every time it came down to this, they lost every time, for a few seasons straight and could never come out victorious. Another good thing that happened this year was that jinx ended! They took a game against Braehead Clan recently, and a scoreless overtime, the score still 3-3 went to the Shootout. You could tell Hull were gutted, and nervous, that it would be another best of three defeat. But out of shock, they actually won! That was a memorable night which is another reason why they are lifting slowly.

Sudermans departure....improved it?

This pickup seems to have really kicked into hear since captain Matt Suderman departed. If he hadn't have told the press the truth of why he left, everyone would see the rise thinking 'Hold on, why are they doing so well since Suderman left. He was a great player and logically, with our skipper here, we should do better and when he leaves, we struggle without him. Why Vise versa? Whats been going on behind the scenes?'

The questions raised  were all answered in his last press conference as a Stingrays. The reason why they did so bad was because deep down, Matt didn't even like Hull full stop. The city, the organisation, the fans, the officials of the league, he hated it all. So if one player doesn't feel comfortable, it messes up the whole team which is why they did so bad  with him in the roster. Everyone thought he was fine, but it was shocking for him to say that but I guess it's good to be honest! As soon as he left, Hull seemed calmer playing, and they were on the up showing that the rest of the team is comfy!

Didn't we see it from day one?

This was a long while ago, and I understand it was only pre-season but they didn't in fact lose any of their opening build up games. So we knew from there it was a whole new Rays side! They did loose their opening game though to Nottingham getting battered 9-3 vs the defending champions then most fans let out a grown thinking 'We are finished' but then day two of the campaign they beat Braehead Clan on home ice 5-2. I'm not going to cover every day of their season, but if I did, you would see a pattern forming of a small winning run, a small losing run, small winning run, small loosing run and so on. So another improvement, consistency! If they can get that and their defense together, then we have a new powerhouse of the EIHL. They had real consistency last night (Saturday 21st December 2013)  as they beat defending champions Nottingham Panthers 7-5 last night, making them look vicious. Even leading 7-1 at one point! But like I said inconsistency resulted in Panthers almost coming back but not enough as it ended 7-5!

What does this show?

This article proves that Stingrays are a threat to the EIHL, as long as they keep things how they are but get consistent and improve defense and there we go. Hull will be a power house team!

Other weekend scores

As I'm out of time(because of getting previews up) here are last Saturdays (above) and Sunday (below) scores! Highlights up soon. Sorry about this.

Steelers get run over returning from road trip with nothing...

Sheffield Steelers are having a weird season so far. Put their win/loss rate into a line chart and it will be up,down,up,down. They seem inconsistent which is bad. They can't get winning runs together, but are trying to improve. At the weekend, they were on a road trip, Saturday in a packed Odyssey with Belfast having a real great season at the top of the all important standings then Sunday went to Coventry to face the blaze, a very evenly matched game, as both these sides are having similar seasons!

Late Collapse by Steelers sees Giants escape tight tilt to cruise through Sheffield...

Giants went into this game with a very confident team whose fans were having a blast packing the arena including sports entertainer Cameron Hughes in the arena (More on him in a later article) to make the place lively and pumping and the game would be the same too!

It was't an easy clash, and Steelers came out first. Steven Goertzgen firing home at 5:33! However, Giants showed why they are top and it took less than a minute for Colin Sheilds to send the place mental! 1-1. You thought that was quick, 20 seconds later at 7:07 Robbie Sandrock put giants in the lead and the early blow of goals ended the first period. 2-1.

The first had early goals, the second had very late ones, in fact it took until with 5 seconds left for Colin Shields again to make it 3-1.

They hung on well in the third, but sweat started drippng when Steelers bought it tight. Giants pretty much had it the bag, but with under two minutes left, Drew Fata made it a shocking finale. Goalie pulled. Steelers wanted a comeback but Sandrock raced down the ice to secure it. Despite Giants winning it, Steelers pulled Doyle again, they had better ideas but they were just making it worse for themsleves. Kevin Suarette fired home to make it a great night for Giants! Final score: Belfast Giants 5-2 Sheffield Steelers
Stats:
Shots on goal: Giants (On Frank Doyle) 30; Steelers (On Stephen Murphy) 28
Powerplay: Giants: 1/5; Steelers: 0/4
Attendance: 4500 (estimated)
Referee: Mike Hicks; Linesmen: Gordon Pirry and Ally Flockhart

Steelers slip again for disappointing thump by Blaze...

Both Sheffield Steelers and Coventry Blaze are having mixed seasons so far so this game could've  gone any way. Last time they met, Blaze won in overtime so Steelers were looking for revenge.

Things didn't go to plan though for the Steelers as at 10:39, Kenny Kallastrom making it Blazes game!

7:30 into the second, it was Cale Tanaka firing home to have it a one sided game. Steelers though weren't taking this anymore and Nic DiCasmiro sliced the lead in half for 2-1 at 27:30

It was a close one in the third but it was all Blaze, score wise, Steven Chamlers kept Blaze comfy at 33:36 as he made it 3-1 then with 27 seconds left, Russ Cowley sealed it! Final score: Coventry Blaze 4-1 Sheffield Steelers
Stats:
Shots on goal: Blaze (On Frank Doyle) 27; Steelers (On Mike Zacharias) 38
Powerplay: Blaze: 0/5; Steelers: 0/6
Attendance: 2046
Referee: Tom Darnell; Linesmen: Lee Young and Sam Motton

Friday heartbreak leads to huge bounce back for Clan...

Last weekend was big for Braehead Clan, really lucky to have two home games in as many nights! It wouldn't be easy though as Friday they faced defending champions, the Nottingham Panthers and then Saturday was a game against an in form Cardiff Devils!

Goal fest ends in late heartbreak in OT...

This was to be one hell of a game as Clan met Panthers for the first time in Glasgow this regular season! It was to be edge of seat action which was great from the off.

14:44 was when Panthers struck first. New boy Robert Farmer whose becoming a real threat. He scored against his former club for 1-0. Less than three minutes later, Panthers made it 2-0 as Leigh Salters fired home to take a 2 goal spread into the second 20 minutes!

Clan came back fighting though and Ash Goldie scored at 25:13 to cut the lead in half! Then at 29:36, Clan tied it up as Joe Cullen scored to now make it 2-a-piece. Both teams wanted that third goal and Clan got the mini comeback at 33:22 Lee Esders putting Clan in front for the first time that game! As the period came to a close, the dying seconds ticked and Panthers Peter Kalus put them back in it. 3-3.

4:43 into the last period, Chris Capraro put Nottingham back in front for now 4-3 Nottingham but at 39:22 Clan made this a big tilt and Goldie again fired home to send it to overtime. There was big things to come!

An action packed extra five minutes was heading to be scoreless, but Matt Francis pulled Clan apart as he lifted it past Kyle Jones in goal for the Clan with just THREE seconds left in overtime! Final score: Braehead Clan 5-4 Nottingham Panthers
Stats:
Shots on goal: Clan (On Neil Conway) 37; Panthers (On Kyle Jones) 31
Powerplay: Clan: 3/9; Panthers: 2/7
Attendance: 2057
Referee: Rab Cowen; Linesmen: Paval Halas and Ally Flockhart

Clan smile for the camera in style as they zoom past Devils...

Braehead Clan wanted to bounce back from the previous nights heartbreak.. They played another home game in front of not just the home fans, but in front of a TV audience!

Clan got off with a boom as 4:06 was when David Nycholat opened the scoring then 2-0 came quickly at 5:05 as skipper Ash Goldie made it Clans game! Devils though re grouped and Tom Kurka scored at 11:18 for 2-1 and Clan would hold that lead until period two!

Just 2:40 into period two, Matt Haywood extended Clans lead to two goals then at 34:03, Neil Trimm had Clan flying but just over a minute later, it became 4-2, Max Birbraer scoring. Tristian Harper scored though with just 50 seconds left in the second for now 5-2.

The third period pretty much closed off a great game, despite Devils getting two goals, Clan rallied for an 8-4 win! Sorry I'm out of time so heres the stats: http://www.eliteleague.co.uk/stats/official-game-report.php?game_id=1741

Flyers on a comeback roll...

Fife Flyers had a tough weekend, entertaining home fans on Saturday night against a Hull Stingrays side who are now becoming a real threat to the league then Sunday, down to Coventry Blaze looking for revenge on their defeat to the same side at home the previous week.

Tough test sees nail biting finish...

A big crowd in Fife saw a Saturday night showdown versus the ever-rising Hull Stingrays who are getting their act together, hopefully in time for Christmas!!
But Stingrays got a shock when John Fulton scored just 2:22 in for 1-0 Flyers but at 11:21, goal machine Guy Doucet fired home to tie it up then Stingrays went in front at 19:06 in the last minute of the period for now 2-1 Stingrays!

The second period dawned and got off with a bang 21:58 as Justin Dacosta made it neck n neck! But at 27: 26, new boy Kyle Haines, who is making a big impact on Flyers, scored a big goal to put them back in front! This was a real tense game, every shot on your teams goalie, you were thinking "please don't score" dripping with sweat! But as nice as you asked, Rays said NO! And at 34:04, the nemesis that is Jereme Tendler fired home to keep this game at anyone's competition! The third period saw both teams hanging on for dear life and sent it to overtime.

No goals in breathless overtime so to the shootout. Flyers won it in a tight one but took the points in one mind blowing hockey game!  Final score: Fife Flyers 4-3 Hull Stingrays (shootout)

Third period comeback stuns Blaze...

This was a huge game for Coventry Blaze, as Fife Flyers, who had broke their loosing streak the previous night, went into this game looking for a big four point weekend also looking for revenge on Blaze, as the previous week, they lost 4-2 on home ice to the same opponents so Flyers wanted to get them back for that!

Things got off well, as Blaze had first blood, Mike Egner firing home at 3:52 for 1-0 Blaze. Flyers came back though, and Derek Roehl tied it up setting a real scene of a battle between these two rising sides. Blaze would however have the lead at the end of the first as Ashley Tait fired home for 2-1. The same man scored again in the second, 3:11 into that period!

Bobby Chamount though made it a one goal game at 35:40 but Blaze meant business and and Ryan Ginand at 36:09 just a few seconds after Flyers 2nd! Blaze were flying, 4-2 at the end of the second! The Skydome was loud and Blaze thought they'd won it! They didn't know what was coming!

Flyers were playing like it was their lives at stake and were rewarded! Steven Gunn made it a one goal game yet again, then at 47:22 Tom Hartung finally leveled the game up, to leave Blaze startled. There lead had just burst into pieces as Bob Chamount again made it 5-4! He then completed his hat trick at 52:45 as Flyers had just made EIHL history! Salt was added to the wound at 55:42, as the guy who scored goal one finished Blaze off(Dereck Roehl) for a brilliant final score of Coventry Blaze 4-7 Fife Flyers

Braehead Clan had two big games last weekend! Saturday they hosted Edinburgh Capitals (match report on home page) then Sunday they traveled to Hull to face a big defense stingrays side!

Tight game results in big shootout, and a big win...

Hull Stingrays went into this game game knowing that their games with Clan are always big. This encounter made no difference!

A big first period saw 4 goals already, both sides sharing them equally, Chris Frank got clan the first goal at 5:31 after a number of rebounds. At he half way mark of the first though, Carl Lauzn tied it for Rays. 1-1. Then a few minutes later, Guy Doucet, possibly Stingrays best player, put them in the lead. As the clock ticked down for the first, Clan were back level as Joe Cullen netted at 19:34. This was a tight battle at the end of the first. 2-2.

Both teams tried to get the next goal, then Neil Trimm at 10:47 put Clan in front the end of the second. They had 20 minutes to secure it but Hull had better ideas...

They pressed hard for that leveling 3rd goal and 6:06 into the third, Carl Lauzon made it 3-3. It stayed that way until the buzzer went sending this to a scoreless overtime. Now to the shootout. Hull hated them as its been nearly two years since they last won one of these So clan could relax? Right? WRONG!! Stingrays won the shootout an broke their long curse for a final score of Hull Stingrays 4-3 Braehead Clan!
Stats: Shots on goal: Stingrays (On Kyle Jones) 32; Clan (On Ben Bowns) 39

Devils blitz panthers to stun them...

This Saturday night encounter, between two in form side but both had things on their mind as Panthers played their first away match since returning from Italy in the Continental cup!

It was looking to be a scoreless first period but late on at 18:05 as the break approached Max Birbraer picked up a lovely pass to score. 1-0 Devils after the first break.

In the second, the same man scored again to keep Devils on the upper hand. Just over three minutes later Devils were Flying with Tyson Marsh at 13:43 and then another three passed and Devils had a 4-0 lead which was very unexpected and stunning Panthers at 16:57 as Tomas Kurka fired home. This was one different hockey game.

Just 22 seconds into the second period, some great moves from Panthers new signing Robert Famrer saw him score his first panthers goal for 1-1. Then at 31:04 Chris Capraro gave Nottingham the lead for the first time all weekend for 2-1. Nottingham were on fire now and were doing their bounce back well and and made it 3-1 at just over a minute later when Skipper David Clarke fired home.

Same scoreline in both games sees caps racing...

Edinburgh Capitals had a hard weekend clashing with Braehead Clan on Saturday in Glasgow then Sunday traveled back home to face a tough Coventry Blaze team.

Caps storm comeback, to then get stunned in last minute but make Clan pay in Overtime...

It was a night of remembrance as Braehead Clan fans had a one minute pre-game silence to remember those who lost their lives in a helicopter crash into a pub.

As the game got underway, Clan had the dream start, Neil Trimm smacking it home at 3:28! Just over a minute later though caps made it there game too, Curties Leinweber making it 1-1. Both sides looked strong at this point but Clan had bigger things to come....

Matt Towe put clan back where they were at 11:14 and then  few minutes later, Kenton Smith had Braehead in a comfy lead!

Capitals regrouped in the second though, 28:01 Martin Cingel scoring to put this at a one goal spread. Then the heart-breaker came at 33:44 Jade Portwood, a true caps star put caps in control with a good turn around but things got better.

The third period and both teams were battling for their lives, and exactly one minute into the third, Tom Horna blasted home to leave clan stunned as they lost a 3-1 lead to then become 4-3! Edinburgh fans were ecstatic but Clan weren't letting the comeback go without a fight and it took until the final twelve seconds, goalie pulled and Ed Mcgrange fired home to send it to overtime.

Braehead played really hard and were in control for most of OT. That was until Caps broke down the ice and Joonas Safar scored to complete an astonishing comeback at 3:22 into OT. Final score Braehead Clan 4-5 Edinburgh Capitals(Overtime)
Stats:
Shots on goal: Clan (On Tomas Hiladvlosky) 40; Capitals (On Kyle Jones) 20
Powerplay: Clan: 1/4; Capitals: 2/4
Attendance: 2077
Referee: Scott Dalgleish; Linesmen: Gordon Pirry and Dave Farren

Caps it again with same score but in front of a home crowd vs Blaze...

Edinburgh Capitals traveled home looking to make it their first four point weekend of the season vs Coventry Blaze. Caps haven't had it easy so far but are getting back on track and this game proved it.

Mike Dobron got the only goal of the first period as Mike Dobron scored at 7:17.

Second session, and big things came. Curtis Leinweber put Edinburgh 2-0 up at 23:49 to have them flying, then a few minutes later, the same guy again scored to make it 3-0 and caps had come out with a bang! Blaze were angry and just a few seconds later, Cale Tanaka fired home to break Hiladvloskys shut out! As the end of the second approached, Mike Devin scored for Blaze to now make it a one goal game and hopes for a comeback for the west midlands side were looking high.

The third period was tense and Caps didn't want an embarrassment so Curtis Leinweber completed his hat trick at 46:06. The blaze comeback though, was still on as they would stun caps. First of all, at 55:24 Shea Guthrie fired home to make it a one goal game then in the dying minutes, Coventry turned the whole course of the game around. as Kevin Harvey tied it up at 56:38. This sent it to overtime again, just like the day before in Braehead at the same score of 4-4. Overtime was tense, both sides looking for the extra point and who would guess it? Da ja vu. 1:14 into the extra period of hockey, the same guy who won it the day before, Joonas Safar won it for caps. Again, a 5-4 overtime win with the same player scoring the winner! WOW! Final score: Edinburgh Capitals 5-4 Coventry Blaze

Shots on goal: Capitals (On Mike Zacharias) 20; Blaze (On Tomas Hiladvlosky) 26
