Battle of the goalies as Giants and Clan play sensational game

These two teams only played one game at the weekend, against each other and is becoming a rivalry. The reason why is probably because whenever Giants are doing well, Clan seem to play them at there own game. With Saturdays game between these teams, Clan were ready and this would be a screamer of a game. Heres how it went...

Not many goals, but lots of action as thriller of a game and anyones game sees Giants edge Clan...

Top of the league Belfast Giants are almost league champions and were hoping to keep it up against Braehead Clan which turned out to be one of the toughest and best hockey games of the season.

From the first puck drop, the sold put Braehead arena knew that they were in for an explosive match-up. It was like both of these teams were top of the league. Someone had to score eventually and at 17:06 Ash Goldie backhanded it in the net for 1-0 Clan. Giants have been great all season though and responded quickly (just under two minutes later) for 1-1. Jeff Szwez with the goal.

The second and third period were scoreless, as both goalies were making countless saves, playing some amazing hockey which should make them proud goaltenders! It was intense throughout as the offense tested the defense and goalies, both teams looked top of the league but someone had to win. The only way to reward both sides was by going to overtime as they got a point. Who would double it though? It was all to play for.

Overtime was full of drama and Clan played it calmly but a wrong pass saw Dustin Whitecotton all alone to fire it in for a giant win! 2-1 to Giants final score!

Blaze take four points off biggest rivals in HUGE weekend...

Coventry Blaze had their biggest weekend of the season so far as they took on two of their biggest rivals, Nottingham Panthers at the NIC Saturday then traveled home to face growing rivals Cardiff Devils.

Thrilling game sees Henrich end dramatic contest early in Overtime...

This was one of the best hockey games you will ever see. No player had a bad game and it was edge of your seat stuff from the drop of the first puck. These teams of course played the aftermath of a bench clearence the week before. Panthers had many players out injured or suspended. They were limited to just 12 skaters so this was to be tough, but the 12 guys gave their everything and probably deserved a win.

It was a dramatic first period seeing Panthers have a lot of shots, but most wide. If they were not wide, the puck was a magnet hitting the bar over and over again! But as Blaze broke down the ice, former Panther grand slam star Kelsey Wilson scored against his former team mates on his debut. That would end the first period on a high note for the Midlands side.

Panthers were not letting the bar take the puck anymore in the second and as the clock ticked, Lynn Loynns picked up a loose puck to tie it going into the last 20 minutes.

The third period was all Panthers but when Blaze got possession, Ryan Ginand picked up a half way third period mark pass to put Blaze back up.

The pressure was on the Panthers and after a disallowed goal due to goalie substitution, Matt Francis made up for it as he thumped it home on the power play with 2:52 to go to tie it. Overtime it was!

It was going to be tense and tight, but Blaze got the job done quick as Michael Henrich pulled a highlight reel goal on Neil Conway to seal it. Panthers deserved it more but there fans could go home proud. 3-2 Blaze OT

Loads of disallowed goals, match bans, stunning saves and a close result...

Another rivals game for Blaze, which would again be an extravaganza. Cardiff Devils are going through rough times so they needed to win this.

Devils new goalie, Kamil Kosowksi (sharing ice time with Phil Cook) had a fantastic game. Between most goals, there were disallowed ones too,  busy night for the referee and linesmen then!

The first period was full of action, but no goals, so the first goal came early in the second when Ryan Ginand found the net. 1-0 Blaze. Two minutes later, he doubled the lead to have Coventry cruising. 2-0.Mac Faulkner scored however to half it as the second was at its midway point. 2-1.

It was heading for a scoreless third but with one second left, Kelsey Wilson, who was only in his second game for the club sealed an empty netter securing a win fr a 3-1 win for the blaze. Their hardest weekend of the season gave them four points.

Devils get crushed by giants TWICE...

Cardiff Devils season has been bad lately getting hammered most game-days. They couldn't afford mistakes this time as they faced top team Belfast Giants twice. Saturday at the big O in Belfast, Sunday at the BBT in Cardiff.

Starts low, ends high as Giants destroy Devils...

Belfast Giants played their first game since the heartbreaking 3-2 overtime loss to Dundee the week before looking to re-start the streak. They would succeed.

A close first period saw Colin Sheilds open the scoring at 13:15 However, Devils Mac Faulkner leveled it up quickly for 1-1 at the end of the first.
All from different
Giants came out fierce in the second with four more goals. All form different players.

The third pretty much settled it down. Two more early goals sealed it for giants but devils got the last say but too little too late! 7-2 Belfast

Giants go to eleven heaven sending devils four hell...

Devils looked for revenge on day two of the double up between these two sides. Despite devils playing well, giants stunned them and blew them to pieces recording the biggest EIHL score of the season so far. Brilliant play saw them beat Cardiff 11-4!

Clan miss out on points after close defeats...

Over this weekend, Braehead Clan had possibly their biggest weekend of the journey so far. Saturday night was home vs Sheffield Steelers who are getting lots of wins together now and Sunday was down to an unstoppable Dundee Stars side. Here's the action of what happened and how it went.

Another one goal home loss sees Steelers on a four game roll...

Sheffield Steelers knew this would be tough facing former coach Ryan Finnerty and his new side along with former star Lee Esders in Clans lineup.

The first period to be fair was all steelers as they put loads of pressure on the clan defense, Kyle Jones especially. But Steelers got rewarded for their pressure as Drew Fata blasted the puck into the net for 1-0 steelers at the end of the first.

Jonathan Philips doubled the lead as he found the net for a 2-0 lead but after that Clan were determined to change things and the final few minutes of the second and they were all over them. They got back into the game too as Ash Goldie broke the shut out for Frank Doyle who'd had a great game up to this point!

Clan then got right back level as Joe Cullen fired home but Stephan Myer put steelers back in front to win the game 3-2.

Then on Sunday Clan lost away to Dundee, 4-3, sorry I'm out of time (busy a lot sorry).

Devils send Blaze to hell in dominating performance, but Blaze do the same to make it even series..

This is another big Christmas fixture seeing rivals Coventry Blaze and Cardiff Devils meeting up Boxing day, and the 28th December. Just like the panthers vs steelers! These were to be amazing games just like the other rival games! Boxing day was in Coventry and 28th was in Wales.

Edge of your seat stuff sees Devils top Blaze in round one of Christmas Competition...

These two met knowing it was vital for a win and from start to finish, they showed just that!

Blaze wanted it more in the first period as Shea Guthrie and Ryan Ginand put Blaze two up in a dominant 20 minutes, Cardiff's defense sat back a bit but they improved in the second, as did the whole devils team to rise from the 2-0 game.

Chris Blight and Josh Batch scored early second period goals for Blaze to loose their lead fairly quick. Then it was gone, five minutes hadn't been played in this period, and Batch again put Devils ahead. The midway point approached and it was Andrew lord who made it 4-2 to turn this around in a real tense hockey game! Ryan Ginand closed the gap to one and weren't letting anything go as Blaze were playing to their strengths.

Blaze carried on trying to catch up to the lead they'd lost but Devils knew the better tactics and Luke Piggot rewarded Devils for their pressure and scored for 5-3. Blaze added more pressure though skipper Ashley Tait fired home for 5-4 to make this anyones competition as both teams biggest rival right now was the clock! But Josh Batch got his 6-4 hat trick goal to win it for Devils in an action packed game for a final score of Coventry Blaze 6-4 Cardiff Devils!
Stats:
Shots on goal: Blaze (On Phil Cook) 37; Devils (On Mike Zacharias) 37
Powerplay: Blaze: 0/7; Devils: 0/2
Attendance: 2010
Referee: Mike Hicks; Linsemen: James Kavanagh and Johnny Liptrott

Blaze revenge comes tight in Wales, but pick up two points...

Game two on the 28th December between these rivals was another brilliant match up! Blaze knew that revenge was what they needed, and this wouldn't disappoint.

Late on in the first, Kevin Harvey got the fightback underway for the Midlands side and that would be a one goal spread at the end of the first!

Shea Guthrie made it 2-0 but like last time, Cardiff responded to a two goal spread as Mac Faulker sliced the lead in half for 2-1. Like last time, Devils comebacked a two goal deflict as Mark Richardson made sure of that for 2-1 at the end of the second.

Blaze didn't want to make the same mistake twice though and Shea Guthrie put Coventry level with Cardiff 2-2!

Max Birbraer put Devils back ahead late, on but even later goals from Blaze turned the game around to win 4-3!

Steelers take on panthers in EIHL Christmas main event..

Every year this is a fixture we all look forward to, at Christmas especially. The Nottingham Panthers vs Sheffield Steelers double header! Always big crowds and brilliant games these fixtures are. The Christmas one though is the best meeting you see with these two, unless they meet in the playoffs of course! But here are reports from boxing day and the 28th December between these blistering rivals!

Frank Doyle gets the dream Christmas present in boxing day clash..

These two met in the biggest EIHL game of the season so far! Both teams had large support for this game. I didn't have the best view but still a great game. To be fair, Steelers dominated that game, which is why they got the result they did. And that's coming from me, a panthers fan!

The game got off to a panther/steeler start as expected and both teams were putting the early pressure on.
But a beautiful pass by Shawn Limpright set a Robert Dowd breakaway seeing him fire past Neil Conway for 1-0 Steelers at break one. Second period was all steelers though as panthers fell apart. Steelers got another goal as Rob Siriani made it a two goal gap.

Steelers hung on in the last stanza to win the big game. A shutout for Frank Doyle helped Sheffield to a 2-0 win.
Stats:
Shots on goal: Steelers (On Neil Conway) 27; Panthers (On Frank Doyle) 34
Powerplay: Steelers: 0/4; Panthers: 0/3
Referee: Tom Darnell; Linesmen:  Andy Dalton and Paul Staniforth

No revenge for panthers, but are on the up with improved performance results in a point...

Panthers looked for revenge in the re-match at home in front of another sell out crowd and they got one hell of a game! It was close all the time, Steelers got first blood though as Rob Siriani fired home for 1-0 steelers. Panthers leveled later on though as Johnathan Boxill tied it up! 1-1 at interval one!

The second period came, and good passing saw a blast from Johnathan Phillips to put them up once again.

However, Panthers played outstanding though as the clock ticked down, and good penalty killing saw Matt Francis break down the ice to send the NIC mental. It was 2-2 going into the sweat dripping overtime, hearts were pumping...

Stephan Myer though scored that time stopping goal mid way through the extra five to win it for Steelers!
Final score: Sheffield Steelers 3-2 Nottingham OT
Stats:
Shots on goal: Panthers (On Frank Doyle) 27; Steelers (On Neil Conway) 29
Powerplay: Panthers: 0/3; Steelers: 0/5
Attendance: 7028
Referee: Mike Hicks; Linesmen: Lee Young and Andy Dalton

News updates...

Hi fans! I know they are really late but as you may know I'm busy during the week so can't post all match reports from midweek games, or all news. heres some late articles. May not be worth reading now but its some pass time i guess. So sorry.

Another injury for Lacosta forces retirement, Cook takes his place...

A remarkable hockey career for Dan Lacosta came to a bad end a few weeks ago. In a game vs Braehead Clan in Scotland saw a skate hit Lacostas head to end his career. This was his fourth injury of the season which tells the story really. He has had a truly amazing career though including an 8 game spell in the NHL with Columbus Blue Jackets. Even a shutout at one point!

Its been a true adventure for him which I'm sure he'll always treasure! But Devils searched for a new goaltender quickly and got one quickly; Phil Cook. Who made his mark pretty much straight away! He is a great goalie who throws himself at the puck in great spirit too! He wants to win and Devils are lucky to of found him!

Games I couldn't cover (they're late but heres the results)
