Some big games tonight in EIHL action. Braehead, who are getting back to winning ways have a big game tonight against top club Belfast giants who had a fantastic 4-3 win over Nottingham panthers last night.

Also, up in Sheffield, the steelershave the   Fife flyers in town, Fife have now got a win on the board after their victory over Edinburgh Capitals so they can now go to ice sheffield with more confidence. Sheffield, on the back of a first 4 point weekend last week, are also confident now so both these teams are raring to go.

The victims of Fife flyers first win, the Edinburgh Capitals are looking to bounce back as they host Hull stingrays tonight as these two struggling sides will try to get back to winning ways.

History makers, the Nottingham panthers who got through in the Continental cup last week get back to Elite league home action tonight vs Coventry Blaze at the NIC in Nottingham. The panthers are in great form and despite a bad 4-3 loss in Belfast Friday, the panthers will move on from that, and get back to their great form. Blaze didn't do well last weekend as they lost twice to Cardiff devils hone and away so will be out for revenge big time. So both these teams are on the end of losses but will be ready tonight as blaze go to Nottingham to take on the Nottingham panthers.

weekend review

Continental cup glory for panthers...

The Nottingham panthers this weekend played in the international hockey tournament: The continental cup. Round two was hosted in Nottingham with 4 teams attending: HYS The hague; Bipolo Vivatoria; Riga Dinamo Juniors and the panthers. Game one of the tournament on Friday was The hague vs Riga in which Riga thrashed them 8-3. Highlights here:

That night was panthers opening game of the tournament which saw them beat Bipolo 5-3. A game which panthers led 5-1 at one point, Bipolo almost made a shocking comeback but panthers hung on to win their first continental cup game. Highlights here:

Onto Saturday and it was an afternoon showdown as Bipolo took on Riga. And it was Riga who once again dominated the scoreboard with a 7-2 win. Highlights here:

Saturday night, panthers second game was a great one vs Hague. Hague took a one goal into the first break but at the second, panthers had leveled 1-1 through Matt Francis. It was a low scoring tight game at this point. But a shocking SIX goal third period including a Matt Francis hat trick and despite two goals for  The hague, it wasn't enough to stop the mighty panthers. Highlights here:
Final day was Sunday and the second to last game of round two saw Bipolo take on HYS the hague and it was The hague who got their first win of the tournament and only win edging it 5-3. Highlights here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A6S-AQPkz50&feature=c4-overview&list=UUyon6AP_RAh7pl4K0lK1hBA
Final game of the round was a big one, riga vspanthers. both teams had won all their games so far so one team would loose their first game of the continental cup! However, the winner would go through to the next round in Italy. Matt Francis scored a breakaway for 1-0, then David Clarke scored a tight goal for 2-0 but late on in the first a well worked goal from Riga saw a tight 2-1 lead for panthers after the first period. Chance after chance in the second came but both goalies weren't letting anything get past them and that would result in a scoreless second setting up a vital third with a place in Italy at stake. Both teams played their hearts out and it would be a great goal from Leigh Salters to seal the win and panthers got their place in history for another weekend of writing the history books. It was one of the best weekends in panthers history and they've made British ice hockey proud. Here is one of the fights in the game and underneath is full highlights:

Sheffield finally have  4 point weekend...

Sheffield have had it hard this year, with rough losses and major injuries that have cost them. This weekend they did something about it, beating Fife flyers 4-1 on Saturday followed by a fantastic 2-1 win over Belfast Giants! It was Saturday night away in Fife and steelers scored once in the first through Rob Siriani and took a 3-0 lead into break two and despite Flyers breaking Doyles shutout steelers sealed the win late on in the third. Onto Sunday and an impressive victory over Belfast would bring confidence galore into the locker room. Giants opened the scoring but steelers were level by the end of the first. A scoreless seconds would put a big third up. Steelers got the only goal of the period to clinch the win.

Devils dominate rivals blaze twice...

A double header weekend for Cardiff Devils and Coventry blaze saw Devils win both games against their big rivals! Saturday night was in Coventry and Cardiff stunned blaze scoring 4 goals in the first to take a 4-0 lead into the 2nd. The home side were looking for revenge and broke the shutout midway through and it was 4-1 at break two. It was a tight third but the end result would see Blaze 3-5 Devils. The travelling fans were the ones going home happy. The next day blaze looked for revenge but devils wouldn't let them get it, they won 4-0 in a shutout win for goalie Dan Lacosta. Dundee try to reclaim top spot with great 4 point weekend...

Dundee are really trying to get back to their top spot after a great 4 point weekend with
victories over Hull away and a home victory over Braehead. Saturday night in Hull was a high scoring action packed game. It went one way then another but Dundee won 5-4 in a shootout. Highlights here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hhjF5YQf6zQ
Next day and it was back home against Brahead clan who had backup goalie Mike Will between the pipes. It was a tight game throughout but an early third period goal from stars gave them a 2-1 win. Highlights here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NsLzxSw-ah8&feature=c4-overview&list=UUPkKGWPFn8EF5-dFEHT5Qlw

Flyers have mixed weekend but finally get first win...

Earlier in this write up, we told you about Sheffield beating Fife, but it was Sundays game which was special for Flyers as they got their first win of the season beating Edinburgh Capitals 4-3 away. Caps scored once every period and so did flyers apart from one extra goal midway to give Fife their first win.

Clan have great weekend despite only one win...

Braehead clan, as we said earlier, had a 2-1 loss in Dundee on Sunday, but Saturday night was a home shootout win vs Edinburgh capitals. Caps had control for most of the time but Clan kept  trying and took the game into OT and won in a late shootout goal.

Weekend review

Giants have amazing four point weekend...
It was possibly the best weekend of the season for Belfast giants so far after an amazing four point weekend with a 4-2 win over Sheffield steelers on Saturday night in front of a packed Giants crowd on home ice to kick it off. Giants returnee Craig Peackock scored after just 54 seconds into his re-debut to send the crowd wild! That was how it stayed until the second period when Jeff Szwez scored an easy goal to keep the confidence alive! Into the third, and Sheffield broke Stephen Murphys shut-out with a goal from Jeff Legue but Belfast edged their lead again as captain Adam Keefe scored for 3-1. Steelers were desperate to comeback and Rob Dowd scored a smack of a shot to bring it close again 3-2. It was an unbelievably tense final few minutes and with a minute to go, steelers had pulled Doyle out of goal for the extra man. Steelers pushed with everything they had but giants kept pushing and scored into the empty net through Dustin Whitecotton. The home crowd were going nuts and counted down the seconds to a memorable win: highlights here:

It was followed by a comeback in Coventry as blaze went 2-0 up early on but giants pulled one back for a close first period but Coventry kept it up with a 3-1 lead goal but giants scored twice for a tie at 3-3 at break two.Final period and Blaze yet again regained the lead to keep in front but an explosion of giants goals completed a fantastic comeback. The final score: 7-4 to giants. highlights here:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=RHOo6UmcNSI

Fantastic weekend for clan...

Braehead clan, like Belfast, had a fantastic four point weekend starting with a brilliant home win on Saturday against top boys Dundee stars. They hammered them 5-1! It was a scoreless first period. Clan however dominated the second taking a 2-0 lead by break two, and in the third clan added and added to their lead, and despite Dundee breaking the shut-out late on, Braehead would keep the pressure on and lead them to their best win so far. Highlights here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZT2ssV7b0fo
It was followed by a tight game on Sunday in Edinburgh. They would come out 3-2 winners with two strikes from Joel Champagne and one from Kevin Bergin and two goals from caps in between would not be enough to win. Caps goalscorers were Michal Dobron and Les Reaney. This would sum up one heck of a weekend for Clan.

Panthers with a four point challenge cup weekend...

It all good stories of four point weekends at the moment is't it? Well heres another team with a brilliant weekend to continue their grand slam defense but this weekend focused on their challenge cup defense. Games at home vs Coventry and away at Hull were both successful wins. It kicked off with a bang at the NIC in Nottingham beating Coventry blaze 5-3. It only took 44 seconds for panther to get on the board via Matt Francis to get the home crowd pumping. A second was added later on and would hold the two goal lead until the first break. But blaze came roaring back in the second with two goals to make a tight third period ahead. Panthers added pressure and scored three unanswered goals to seal it, including a bad giveaway from blaze goalie Mike Zacharias to give Lynn Loyns an easy goal. Mike had a great game making some brilliant stops but panthers got past him when needed. A fifth was added via Matt Ryan on a breakaway to guarantee a win for the big crowd of fans in Nottingham and players too. Blaze were awarded a penalty shot with a few minutes to go and scored but it wasn't enough and panthers won 5-3. highlights here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vKedjhl-cr8

The next day back up goalie for panthers Dan Green, had his first start in net against Hull Stingrays in another cup fixture and a twist and turn game that could've gone anyway but Panthers had another two goal win but in tighter fashion to beat Stingrays 6-4 in Hull. highlights here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1dMXT1qK03g

Up and down weekend for Devils...

Its not been bad or good for Cardiff this weekend. They had a fantastic 8-5 win on Saturday at home against Edinburgh Capitals but got hammered 6-3 in Sheffield the next day. The 8-5 victory, was a 1-1 first period with early goals from both sides but the second would be a 5 goal thriller with caps taking a 4-3 lead going into the final period, but devils would score a whopping 5 goals in the final 20 minutes with two goals for Edinburgh scored in between but a last minute empty netter for Devils would seal off a brilliant victory.

The next night however, saw them loose 6-3 in Sheffield to the steelers despite Phil Hill scoring his last goal as a devil just 24 seconds into the game. He would be released the following day. Steelers would take a 2-1 lead into period two though but dominate the second. They scored four goals to take their tally to 6-2 with a devils goal scored too earlier on. Devils scored the only goal early on in period three but it was too little, too late for devils and they lost 6-3 for a very mixed weekend.

Flyers drop only scoring two goals all weekend...
It was a bad weekend for Fife Flyers who lost both of their games this weekend. As you read earlier on in this report, Dundee stars lost 5-1 to Braehead clan in Braehead but Dundee bounced back from that the following day with A 2-1 win against flyers with Nikita Kashrisky scoring both goals for stars. The following night, flyers were on home ice vs Hull stingrays and stingrays thrashed them 4-1. This keeps Fife bottom of the table. Rok Pajic scored both goals for flyers all weekend.

Steelers get their season back on track beating top guys stars!

Sheffield steelers had an believable win last night against top of the table Dundee. A scoreless tense first period would have a scoreless result. Second period, and stars broke the deadlock as Sam McCluskey got Dundee the first goal of the game. They would hod this lead until the end of the second going into the third. Like Saturday, against Coventry, they trailed 1-0 at the end of the second and would score two in the third, just like Saturdays game. Seems Sheffield's pattern at the moment! They would get on the board via Jeff Legue and Stefan Myer would grab the winner midway through the third. Steelers held onto to this lead for the rest of the game to get their best win so far this season!
This now puts them fifth in the table! Dundee played well, but not well enough...
Steelers goaltender Frank Doyle said after the game: "I had to make a big save in the final few minutes to avoid stars leveling. The game was at fate, and i knew i had to make sure we could win against a top team. We knew that we were against a top form team in Dundee and had to come up big, which we did."

Weekend review

Dundees reign continues but have an eventful night in Hull in a dramatic weekend...

Dundee had a double header weekend with Hull facing them Saturday in Hull on Humberside and Sunday in Dundee.  Saturday kicked it off in Hull, Dundee wanted to keep their reign at the top of the league going. Hull would turn out 2-1 winners, starting off with a fabulous breakaway goal and an unbelievable shot from behind the goal line that squeaked in. Goal highlights here:

But it was a certain event during the third period which shocked the Elite league. It all started off with a huge fight behind the goal. Next thing, Derek Campbell was kicked out. But as he exited the ice and went off ice to the locker room, I'm not sure whether it was a fan or a player from the video, But Campbell got into a fight with them off the ice, which is illegal. If it was a fan, then Campbell should be banned. He already has one game on his ban list after a that. Possibly more? If it was a player though, both are in the wrong: The Dundee player came out of the locker off ice INTO THE CROWD, and fought a player and Campbell shouldn't respond. If you ask me, thats outrageous. Both should be banned. Video of it here:
That would start a rivarly between these teams with from what looked to be an easy win, turned into the most eventful game of the season so far! WOW!

A Giant win in Cardiff for Belfast...

Cardiff devils had a home game against Belfast giants on Saturday and a brilliant game of hockey would see Belfast run out victorious with a 4-1 win. Kevin Suarette and Mac Faulkner would be the scores for a 1-1 first period. Second session, and giants took the lead through Jeff Szwez and Rob Sandrock for a 3-1 by the seocnd break. Third, and giants would seal of another great win for the Irish side. After this great performance, the away fans would go across the sea with smiles on their faces. They are now second in the table, behind Dundee stars. Highlights here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yWTGtHoFXRQ

Panthers book place in challenge cup quarter finals....

On Sunday, Nottingham panthers hammered Coventry Blaze 6-1 in Coventry to clinch their place in the challenge cup quarter final.
Panthers led 4-0 by the end of the second break but Blaze broke the shutout through Kevin Harvey. Nottingham though added two more for a smashing of the home team 6-1! Highlights here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=RHOo6UmcNSI The previous night, they had a league home game against Braehead clan in which they won 4-2. A fantastic man of the match performance by Matt Ryan saw him pick up two points. Panthers opened the scoring via David Clarke but clan were level by the end of the first. Second period was a great period of hockey with a lot of fights. Panthers scored two more but clan pulled one back. At the final break. It was 3-2. One goal in a really close third period which could've gone any way! Matt Ryan scored a well deserved goal to put the game at bay. The home fans celebrated a fantastic 4-2 win. And are third in the table!

Blazes brilliant run put to a stop with a dreadful weekend...

It has been a brilliant season so far for Coventry blaze. After finally slaying the dragon which is Dundee, blaze had high expectations for this weekend but shockingly lost both games. A team that beat the top guys then looses twice in a row! WOW! They got hammered by Nottingham 6-1 on Sunday at home(match report a few posts above) after an overtime defeat in Sheffield on Saturday 3-2. They led 1-0 after two periods and were shaping up to be winners but a steelers comeback would see it 2-2 at the end of regulation. Overtime was here and one goal would win it. A steelers goal in overtime would give them a fantastic win. And get their season back on track. Highlights here:

Yet again a win-less weekend for caps...

Edinburgh capitals still are not doing well this season only scoring one goal all weekend after loosing 5-0 in Fife, followed by a 3-1 home defeat by Cardiff. Their bad season continues. Matt Reber, Nickerson, Danny Stewart, Jordan Fulton and Rok Pajic would all score goals for flyers win and a first shutout of the season for goalie Kevin Regan. Next night, caps were back home against devils which would result in a 3-1 loss as devils bounced back from their 4-1 defeat at home to Belfast the previous night. Despite caps opening the score through Jake Portwood, Cardiff levelled in the final minute of the first via Ben Davies. Mac Faulkner gave Devils the lead in period two and Ben Davies would grab his second to seal the win.

EIHL table after this weekend...

1Dundee9720014
2Belfast7520010
3Nottingham6510010

8Hull615002
9Edinburgh514002

Hull slip eight now after their eventful weekend. Fife are struggling now despite their challenge cup shutout win Saturday but league wise, they are still without a win. And as we seem to say at the end of every roundup, Dundee are top!
